The universe begins to expand and cool. There is no centre and no edge. The Big Bang happened in every place that exists, including the one you are in.

The first stars switch on.
After a hundred million years of darkness, gravity gathers hydrogen into the first stars, and the universe gets its first light since the afterglow.

Dying stars make the elements.
Carbon, oxygen, iron and gold are forged inside stars and scattered when they die. The universe now has a chemistry.
Threshold 3: Chemicals Cook Up4.57 billion years ago · 2 September
A planet forms around an ordinary star.
A disc of gas and dust around the young Sun becomes the Earth, which sorts itself into core, mantle, crust and oceans.
Threshold 4: The Early Earth3.5 billion years ago · 30 September
Chemistry becomes biology.
The oldest accepted fossils are this old, and life itself may be older. Every living thing today descends from those first cells.

A species starts to remember.
Our species appears in Africa and does what no other animal does: it stores what it learns and hands it on. Notice the clock. It is twelve minutes to midnight.

People begin to farm.
Villages, cities, writing, states and empires follow within a few thousand years. Twenty-seven seconds before midnight.
